I prefer to bake from scratch, but considering the current state of our nation, I made an exception. When I was in culinary school, my professor told us how his wife asked for a double chocolate box cake for her birthday every year. We were all puzzled, considering he is a talented pastry chef. He showed us how to spruce up a regular box cake if we are ever short on time or need to cut corners.
In our home, we have all the ingredients to make a cake from scratch, but that didn’t keep me from wondering. What if the stores close, and we need more eggs and butter due to COVID-19? Dairy products are expensive already, so why not use those ingredients where they count; the frosting!
Prepare the box cake instructions (choose any that you prefer), then add simple syrup to make sure it is moist. Next add fresh berries in between the layers. It will give the cake an added boost of flavor to provide it with the full semi-homemade touch.
Below is a few step-by-step photos of how to make the frosting and assemble the cake.
